Most people think of the major religions like Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, where does Buddhism fit in? Is it monotheistic or polytheistic? It turns out that Buddhism isn\u2019t that predictable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also known as Buddha <em>Dharma<\/em>, Buddhism is more than the teachings of the Buddha. It\u2019s also the practice of the teachings and the attainment of enlightenment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-monotheism\">What is monotheism?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMono\u201d means one and \u201ctheism\u201d is defined as the belief in the existence of a supreme being or beings. So monotheism is the belief in the existence of one god.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A monotheistic religion believes that a single omniscient god created the world and has the power to intervene, if necessary. Christianity, for example, is a monotheistic religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A polytheistic religion (\u201cpoly\u201d means many), on the other hand, is a religion that believes in the existence of many gods or deities. One of the most well-known and widespread polytheistic religions is Hinduism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-buddhism-polytheistic-or-monotheistic\">Is Buddhism polytheistic or monotheistic?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buddhism is neither polytheistic nor monotheistic. It\u2019s a <strong>non-theistic<\/strong> <strong>religion<\/strong>, meaning that it has no official God or deity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buddha was and is an important figure in Buddhism, but he was not a god or deity. (In fact, he was a man named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient.eu\/Siddhartha_Gautama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Siddh\u0101rtha Gautama<\/a>.) The Buddha is a state of highest consciousness that anyone can reach, according to some branches of Buddhism. He studied under many sages of the age, learning meditation, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindvalley.com\/15-faqs-for-yoga-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">yoga<\/a>, and how to harness the power of his mind. He attained enlightenment at the age of 35 after meditating for 49 days beneath a Bodhi tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After becoming enlightened, he traveled and taught all he could. He died at the age of 80, leaving many great teachings behind, such as the Four Noble Truths and The Noble Eightfold Path.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-gods-do-buddhists-believe-in\">What gods do Buddhists believe in?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a matter of fact, there are no gods or deities in the Buddhist religion. If you wonder who monks pray to and what statues and figures in Buddhist temples represent, they are holy figures called &#8220;bodhisattvas.&#8221; Like the Buddha, these figures are not divine but holy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bodhisattvas were beings so wise that they were able to access nirvana, the state beyond all suffering.
