You could find a mentor or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindvalley.com\/blog\/what-makes-a-great-coach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-styling-context=\"true\" aria-label=\"coach - opens in new tab\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"false\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"na\">coach<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>You could read personal development books or attend seminars and workshops.<\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">If you\u2019ve been doing any\u2014or all\u2014of these things, you might have noticed that certain patterns and themes tend to play out again and again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">These usually center around \u201csmart\u201d habits or widely accepted advice that\u2019s advocated by just about everyone in the self-help world, including top coaches and success \u201cgurus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">But here\u2019s the thing\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Just because an idea is well-known or repeated often doesn\u2019t make it right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Here are three \u201csmart\u201d habits that seem like good ideas but could actually be blocking your path to success and happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>\u201cSmart\u201d habit #1: Positive thinking<\/h2>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Being resolutely positive can take you down the wrong path pretty quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">The human brain is wired to focus on the negative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">When our ancestors assumed a saber-toothed tiger was about to leap out and go for the jugular\u2014even when this was not true\u2014it helped them stay safe. Assuming the worst ultimately allowed the human species to survive an extraordinarily harsh, unforgiving, and dangerous world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Most of us no longer live in an environment where life-or-death situations are the norm, but a part of the modern, evolved human brain is still rooted in ancient times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">This causes us to continuously focus on the worst-case scenario and cling to beliefs that run along the lines of \u201cif anything can go wrong, it will.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">When you try to \u201cforcefully\u201d override this built-in safety mechanism, it\u2019s an exercise in futility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Research shows that when you force yourself to focus on positive thoughts but you don\u2019t\u00a0<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">feel<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">\u00a0positive, you\u2019re only reinforcing the deeper negative thoughts that continue to run in the background of your mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">This is why so many people report that positive affirmations just don\u2019t work. If you don\u2019t feel wealthy, repeating the phrase \u201cI am wealthy\u201d only makes you realize that you\u2019re really not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Radical alternative:<\/strong><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\"> The next time you\u2019re aware of a cloud of negative thoughts floating through your mind, resist hitting the \u201cpositive switch.\u201d Instead, allow these thoughts to rise. Don\u2019t try to stop them, and don\u2019t attach any belief, meaning, or power to them. You\u2019ll find these thoughts fade away on their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>\u201cSmart\u201d habit 2: Goal-setting<\/h2>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">You might be shocked at seeing this habit listed here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">What could possibly be bad about setting goals? Just about every personal development book and teacher on the planet says this as a must-do when you\u2019re charting a path to success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">But there\u2019s a hidden problem with setting goals that hardly anyone ever talks about, and it can derail even the boldest dreamer and the best plans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">By default, a goal exists in your future. Never in your present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">This means that your goal is always ahead of you, above you, in front of you\u2014never in your grasp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">This can create deep feelings of inadequacy and frustration. It means you\u2019re a failure\u00a0<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">until<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">\u00a0you achieve your goal. At which point you\u2019re successful until you set the next goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">This is not to say that you should abandon setting goals altogether. It just means that you need to be aware that goals are not the \u201cvirtuous pillars of personal development\u201d that they\u2019re often proclaimed to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Radical alternative: <\/strong>Be<span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\"> flexible with your goals. Understand that a goal can be changed, moved, shifted, and transformed. And this may come as a shock, but you can even choose to <\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">abandon<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">\u00a0a goal altogether if it\u2019s not working for you or if it\u2019s not aligned with who you are and what you truly want.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>\u201cSmart\u201d habit 3: Daily meditation<\/h2>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">You might have heard or read that the world\u2019s most successful people meditate every day, and now you feel compelled to do it too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">But here\u2019s the thing: our thoughts come and go like clouds across the sky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Trying to control your thoughts with extremely restrictive meditation techniques\u2014including forcing yourself to sit still and \u201cempty your mind\u201d for a specific period of time\u2014often serves to heighten feelings of frustration and anxiety, not decrease them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Radical alternative:<\/strong><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\"> Don\u2019t force yourself to meditate. Instead, stay open to finding other ways to achieve mental clarity and focus. For instance, you could try deep breathing to bring yourself back to center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">You could also turn to mindfulness. Give your full attention\u2014cultivate mindfulness\u2014when you\u2019re doing daily tasks like washing the dishes or doing the laundry. Anything that helps you train your mind to stay in the present moment is a great substitute for formal meditation practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Rule No. 1 of achieving success and happiness? Question everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">These \u201csmart\u201d success habits seem awesome, but when you don\u2019t modify and tweak them to fit, you could end up causing more harm than good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Remember, it\u2019s <\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">your<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">\u00a0life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">You get to make the final decision on what works for you and what
