{"id":11954,"date":"2018-03-30T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-31T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mindvalley.com\/?p=11954"},"modified":"2025-07-23T09:17:22","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T14:17:22","slug":"3-common-coaching-mistakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mindvalley.com\/coach\/blog\/3-common-coaching-mistakes\/","title":{"rendered":"Avoid these 3 coaching mistakes to build a thriving practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\" data-uw-rm-sr=\"\">Coaching is a $2 billion industry, and there are new coaches entering this space every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">If you know me at all, you already know I believe in community and collaboration over competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">So, to me, these numbers aren\u2019t about \u201ctackling\u201d or \u201coutsmarting\u201d other coaches in the business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">It\u2019s about the clients,\u00a0<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">not<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">\u00a0other coaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">The marketplace is becoming more sophisticated, and clients are now more familiar with what it means to get coached than ever before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">They have more clarity on what to expect from a good coach, and they\u2019re able to identify average coaches from truly great ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Here\u2019s what this means for you and me\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">We need to step up our game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">There is not much room for error and even less room for major coaching mistakes on the road to becoming a respected, renowned coach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Here are 3 common coaching mistakes I\u2019ve seen almost every new coach\u2014and even some experienced coaches\u2014make while trying to build a thriving business.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Mistake 1: Trying to help everyone<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">There is an old saying in sales\u2014if you try to sell to everyone, you\u2019re selling to no one. This applies to coaching but with a twist\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">If you try to help everyone, you\u2019re helping no one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">As the industry matures, your <\/span><a style=\"outline: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mindvalley.com\/ultimate-guide-to-coaching-skills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"coaching skills - opens in new tab\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"false\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"na\"><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">coaching skills<\/span><\/a><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\"> need to be focused and fine-tuned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">You need to find a specific aspect of coaching that you excel at. Something that fires you up. Something that will keep you motivated in the long term so you can do what it takes to be one of the best\u2014if not <\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">the best<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">\u2014in your chosen area of expertise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">This could be health coaching for women entrepreneurs, business coaching for those transitioning out of a full-time job, mindset coaching for cancer survivors, life coaching for successful entrepreneurs in their 40s\u2026 It\u2019s up to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">When you specialize in a very specific type of coaching, you\u2019ll find the overall size of your audience actually starts to shrink, but that\u2019s okay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">It means you can coach your ideal clients at a very high level. This will establish your expertise. It will make\u00a0<a style=\"outline: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mindvalley.com\/blog\/ready-to-establish-your-reputation-as-a-world-class-coach-heres-how\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-styling-context=\"true\" aria-label=\"your reputation - opens in new tab\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"false\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"na\">your reputation<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Helping and serving\u00a0<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">everyone<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">\u00a0will do the opposite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">So, narrow down and focus on a specific audience and type of coaching. It will accelerate your rise to the top of your field.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Mistake 2: Looking for a cookie-cutter approach<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">World-class coach\u00a0<a style=\"outline: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tonyrobbins.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-styling-context=\"true\" aria-label=\"Tony Robbins - opens in new tab\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"false\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"na\">Tony Robbins<\/a> said, \u201dSuccess leaves clues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">What he means is that you can achieve success in coaching\u2014or in any other industry\u2014by observing the best in the business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">When you note their power moves, decisions, and trajectory to the top, you can reverse engineer what needs to be done to get to the same place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">This is great. But only up to a point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">You are a unique individual, and this is <\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">your<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">\u00a0coaching practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Your definition of successful coaching practice is likely to be different than everyone else\u2019s\u2014at least, a little.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">This means you simply cannot follow a strategy, formula, or framework to the letter and hope to hit rockstar status with your <a style=\"outline: none; transition: all 0s ease 0s;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mindvalley.com\/ultimate-guide-on-how-to-start-a-coaching-business?utm_source=blog_hyperlink&amp;utm_campaign=evergreen_sycb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-styling-context=\"true\" aria-label=\"coaching business - opens in new tab\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"false\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"na\">coaching business<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">For instance, many extraordinarily successful coaches spend hours at a time on social media platforms to connect with their audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">But what if more than an hour at a time on Facebook drains your energy?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Does this mean you\u2019re left with no other option but to \u201cfollow the rules of success\u201d set by other coaches and stay on social media long after your energy and patience run dry?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Never forget this is your business. You get to set the rules. Look to successful coaches for ideas and insights, but make sure you blaze your own trail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">There\u2019s no such thing as a cookie-cutter path to success.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Mistake 3: Being too independent<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">You\u2019re a free spirit. You\u2019re independent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">You started your own coaching practice so you can make a great living helping others\u00a0<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">on your terms<\/span><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">You get to decide how many hours you want to work in a month, what time you go to sleep every night, and what time you wake up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">You want to be the one who makes all the decisions. And you take pride in doing everything yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">Marketing, accounting, website design, content writing, program creation\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">It\u2019s all on you, right? If you agree, you\u2019re headed for disaster, burnout, and disappointment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">It\u2019s an approach that will bring your business crashing down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-uw-styling-context=\"true\">If you find yourself doing everything in your practice. Stop.
