I\u2019ve come to know something about coaching that not many people talk about.<\/p>\n

The difference between an extraordinarily successful and profitable\u00a0coaching business\u00a0and one that slips into anonymity is easy to miss because it\u2019s made up of a series of seemingly insignificant but dangerous coaching mistakes.<\/p>\n

Some of these coaching mistakes have to do with\u00a0coaching skills. Others are behaviors and business decisions that can ruin your reputation as a coach or tank your business in less time than it took to start it.<\/p>\n

No matter where you are in your coaching practice or how experienced you think you are as a coach, you need to know exactly what these dangerous coaching mistakes are so you can make a conscious choice to avoid them.<\/p>\n

Here are the 10 most dangerous coaching mistakes that could ruin your\u00a0coaching business\u2026<\/p>\n

1. Not listening well<\/h2>\n

Coaches know that listening is one of the most important traits of a good coach.<\/p>\n

Not paying attention to your client is a huge mistake, but what\u2019s more dangerous than that is thinking you\u2019re doing a great job listening to your client when you\u2019re not.<\/p>\n

The truth is, a coach listens not just to the client\u2019s words but to the feelings and intentions hidden behind those words. Listening during a coaching session goes far beyond the kind we engage in during ordinary conversations.<\/p>\n

Seek to hear your client\u2019s true emotions.\u00a0Listen attentively and intuitively. This is the foundation of building an amazing reputation as a great coach.<\/p>\n

2. Not using easy-to-get words<\/h2>\n

You might know what a \u201climiting belief\u201d or a \u201cvalue proposition\u201d is, but does your client truly understand these terms? These phrases and words may be common to you, but they can be classified as industry jargon.<\/p>\n

A successful coaching session requires that you reach and connect with your\u00a0client in a meaningful way. This won\u2019t happen if your client feels like you\u2019re\u00a0speaking a whole other language.<\/p>\n

So, make an effort to communicate using words and phrases that your client uses and understands. This has the additional benefit of creating rapport (another word that can be categorized as industry jargon), which essentially means being able to communicate and create a close, harmonious relationship with the person you\u2019re coaching.<\/p>\n

3. Having a website that sucks<\/h2>\n

Even if you mainly have live, face-to-face coaching sessions with your clients, I can\u2019t tell you how important it is to have a great website for your coaching business.<\/p>\n

Your website is pretty much your digital calling card. If your client\u00a0looks you up online, your site is all they have to go with for a first impression.<\/p>\n

If your most recent blog post shows a date from 2 years ago or if you have a\u00a0website that looks like it\u2019s been put together by your teenage nephew, it\u2019s not\u00a0going to do much for your professional reputation as a coach.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s common to start out by creating a quickie site with as little financial investment as possible, aim to upgrade as soon as you can afford it. Make an effort to regularly write new and helpful blog posts, and make sure that site visitors can easily find out how to reach you.<\/p>\n

4. Not walking your talk<\/h2>\n

Ever heard the phrase,\u00a0\u201cDo as I say, don\u2019t do as I do\u201d<\/em>?<\/p>\n

As a coach, you have to\u00a0walk your talk. If you\u2019re a health coach who advocates sugar-free living, it\u2019s going\u00a0to look pretty bad if your clients come across your personal Facebook page and it\u2019s plastered with photos of you diving into milkshakes, cakes, and cookies.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a business coach who helps clients to create a great social media\u00a0presence for marketing and selling, make sure you\u2019re doing it yourself.<\/p>\n

Walking your talk is a critical piece of the puzzle when you\u2019re creating a\u00a0reputation as a coach and building a profitable\u00a0coaching business.<\/p>\n

Your belief in your own message needs to be rock solid, and it needs to be more than just a message. All great coaches don\u2019t just talk about their message. They live it. And you need to do it too.<\/p>\n

5. Not taking your business seriously<\/h2>\n

What I\u2019m going to say next might sound obvious, but you\u2019ll be amazed at how many people miss this point.<\/p>\n

If you want to be taken seriously as a coach, you\u00a0need to take your business seriously. What I mean is that you have to step into\u00a0the mindset of running a coaching business and not just running coaching\u00a0sessions.<\/p>\n

When you want to grow your audience and your reach, you need to understand\u00a0the moving parts of every successful business. These include marketing, sales,\u00a0growth, analytics, and all the rest.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t have to have an MBA to do this. Just aim for a good understanding of the various areas of a business. You can find some great information online or in some good books on coaching and marketing.<\/p>\n

6. Not investing in your personal growth<\/h2>\n

Great coaches understand that their own personal growth is a priority.<\/p>\n

You need to build your coaching skills and your ability to help all kinds of clients from the inside out.<\/p>\n

Make sure you spend some time every week\u2014every day is ideal\u2014honing your skills as a coach or working on your own beliefs and personal outlook on life.<\/p>\n

One of the best ways to do this is to hire a coach. Coaches need coaching, too.<\/p>\n

So don\u2019t be afraid to find a coach you can trust and who you know can help you take your personal development and your business to the next level and beyond.<\/p>\n

7. Not knowing who your ideal client is<\/h2>\n

You are passionate about being a coach. This is not just a business to you. It\u2019s\u00a0heart and soul work. I get it. I feel the same way.<\/p>\n

But if you\u2019re not clear about the\u00a0kind of coaching and the\u00a0type of clients\u00a0you want to help, you run the risk of\u00a0hurting your business and harming your reputation.<\/p>\n

Listen to your heart on this one. If the idea of working with women\u00a0entrepreneurs lights you up, then go ahead and focus on finding these clients. If\u00a0you love the thought of working with young professionals, then do that.<\/p>\n

Never\u00a0feel like you must coach a particular type of client because that\u2019s the most\u00a0profitable \u201ctarget market.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coaching is a heart-centered profession. If you don\u2019t feel comfortable or aligned with your clients, you\u2019ll never succeed as a coach.<\/p>\n

8. Not knowing how to say \u2018no\u2019<\/h2>\n

Setting healthy boundaries is often a big challenge for just about every coach. Coaches love to support their clients. They love seeing clients grow, change, and achieve their goals.<\/p>\n

So if you\u2019re\u00a0dealing with a client\u00a0who constantly emails, calls, or messages you outside of the agreed sessions or coaching intensive, it\u2019s hard to say no. It\u2019s hard to let them know that you\u2019re not available whenever they feel they need you.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0setting healthy boundaries is a highly critical part of being a coach. If you don\u2019t,\u00a0you run the risk of feeling pulled in too many different directions.<\/p>\n

This leads straight to burnout, and you may even end up resenting your clients. So, learn how to draw healthy boundaries with kindness right from the start.<\/p>\n

This is also a great way to demonstrate to all your clients that healthy boundaries are crucial for healthy, happy relationships.<\/p>\n

9. Not having a niche<\/h2>\n

Some experts or \u201cgurus\u201d may disagree on this one, but NOT having a specialty\u00a0area for your coaching practice can mean the end of your business. Why?<\/p>\n

Because when you try to serve everyone, you\u2019re serving no one.<\/p>\n

The amazing thing about honing down into a niche is that you will be able to\u00a0focus on a very specific aspect of life or business to maximize results for your\u00a0clients. So what\u2019s a niche in the first place? \u201cWomen aged 18 to 40\u201d is not a niche.<\/p>\n

First-time moms who run an online business\u2014that\u2019s a niche. The difference between the two is specificity.<\/p>\n

Narrow down your niche as much as you can. There are many benefits to doing this.<\/p>\n

The right clients will be able to connect with you because they have clarity on what you have to offer them. You will be seen as an expert in your area, and you will stand out in the larger coaching industry.<\/p>\n

10. Not being flexible<\/h2>\n

Just because a certain activity, exercise, or line of questions has always worked with your clients, it doesn\u2019t mean that it always will. A big part of being a great coach is being able to move, change, and transform with the times.<\/p>\n

Keep yourself informed of the\u00a0latest developments and trends in the industry. Read a lot\u00a0and be open to learning from other coaches and using different modalities.\u00a0Consider attending training programs and courses whenever you have the\u00a0chance.<\/p>\n

Becoming a great coach and running a successful coaching business is about\u00a0being adaptable. Give yourself permission to explore new ways of doing old\u00a0things.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s important to avoid these 10 coaching mistakes, don\u2019t get too caught up in doing that either. If you do, you may end up committing a\u00a0hidden 11th dangerous mistake\u2014perfectionism.<\/strong>\u00a0When you\u2019re in the loop of perfectionism, there is no room to grow and improve as you learn from your coaching mistakes.<\/p>\n

So don\u2019t beat yourself up if you find you\u2019ve taken the wrong road in your business. Stop, evaluate where you\u2019re at and your coaching mistakes, and think about your next action step.<\/p>\n
