A contact center veteran built an AI voice line that answers calls 24/7

An AI phone system that answers calls around the clock, verifies callers and books appointments straight into Google Calendar.

After more than 19 years in contact center product management, this builder turned deep domain knowledge into a working AI voice system. With Claude Code as a development partner, they joined telephony, conversational AI, identity checks and calendar booking into one secure workflow. It shows what happens when real expertise meets AI-assisted building.

Frank Carreon
A contact center and CCaaS product manager with 19+ years of experience who built with AI as a development partner.

AI Voice Automation System

Before

For nearly two decades they had worked on contact center products, close to a problem many service businesses share: inbound calls that go unanswered. They knew the telephony logic, the user flows and the edge cases. What they set out to do was build the answer themselves, not just specify it.

“Design decisions were informed by 19+ years of CCaaS and contact center product management experience, ensuring telephony logic, user flows, and edge cases were addressed at a professional standard.”

The turning point

They adopted an AI-assisted development model, with Claude Code as the primary development partner. They followed the discipline they knew from product work: define the business problem, design the architecture, build iteratively, add identity verification, then test how the conversations held up and how failures were handled. AI gave them speed, and their experience kept the quality high.

“AI accelerated development.”

After

They now have a multi-API system that answers inbound calls through Twilio Voice, holds natural conversations using OpenAI models, verifies callers with Twilio Verify and books appointments into Google Calendar. It all runs on a secure Node.js and Express backend. In their words, it is not a prototype or a demo but a system designed for real business deployment.

What it lets people do

Service businesses can have every call answered, day or night, by a voice that understands context. Callers can confirm who they are and leave the call with an appointment already on the calendar.

What they learned

They came away convinced that the gap between a demo and a deployable solution is architecture and reliability. AI made the pace possible, but understanding the business problem and building with engineering discipline made the system credible.

“The key distinction between a demo and a deployable solution is architecture and reliability.”

Achievements: Designed and built a production-grade AI voice automation system solving a critical revenue leakage problem: missed inbound calls for service-based businesses. The system: - Answers inbound calls 24/7 via Twilio Voice - Conducts natural, contextual conversations using OpenAI models - Verifies caller identity using Twilio Verify (MFA) - Books appointments directly into Google Calendar - Operates within a secure Node.js/Express backend architecture This is not a prototype or demo — it is a fully orchestrated, multi-API system designed for real business deployment. The project demonstrates applied AI excellence by combining conversational AI, telephony infrastructure, identity verification, and calendar automation into a secure, production-ready workflow. Tools: Claude Code (Anthropic) OpenAI GPT API Twilio Voice, Messaging & Verify (MFA) Google Calendar API Node.js / Express VS Code ngrok (development tunneling) Methodology: This system was built using an AI-assisted development model, with Claude Code as the primary development partner. The process followed enterprise product discipline: 1. Business problem definition (missed call revenue loss) 2. Architecture design (multi-API orchestration + security layer) 3. Iterative backend development 4. MFA integration for identity verification 5. Testing conversational reliability and failure handling 6. Production-readiness validation Design decisions were informed by 19+ years of CCaaS and contact center product management experience, ensuring telephony logic, user flows, and edge cases were addressed at a professional standard. AI accelerated development. Domain expertise ensured production quality. Learnings: Applied AI excellence requires: - Deep understanding of the business problem - Strategic selection of the right AI and infrastructure stack - Engineering discipline to build secure, reliable systems The key distinction between a demo and a deployable solution is architecture and reliability. AI-assisted development made velocity possible. Contact center domain expertise made the system credible. The future of applied AI is not prompt engineering alone — it is full-stack orchestration across APIs, security, and business workflows.
