An urban researcher turned years of theory into AI-built tools for cities

An urban researcher used AI as a co-designer to build a City Intelligence Index, Syn.City.AI and a learning Academy for cities.

This urban researcher decided their work should do more than sit in publications. During the program they began building AI-enabled products that turn complex urban theory into systems cities can use. It is a clear picture of what happens when deep expertise meets a new way of building.

An urban researcher working on evidence-based urban leadership and city intelligence.

City Intelligence Index (CII), Syn.City.AI and the Academy

Before

Their urban research lived mainly as theory and publication. The ideas were rich and complex, but turning them into something cities could apply was slow. AI, if used at all, was a passive tool rather than a partner.

“Rather than treating AI as a passive tool, I use it as a strategic co-designer to structure knowledge, accelerate synthesis, and translate complex theory into applied systems.”

In their own words

The turning point

They began actively developing AI-enabled digital products to expand and operationalise their research. The shift was in how they used AI: as a strategic co-designer to structure knowledge, speed up synthesis and translate theory into applied systems.

After

They are now building the City Intelligence Index, a measurable framework for evidence-based urban leadership, alongside Syn.City.AI and a growing Academy. AI supports their modelling of indicators, refinement of methods, scenario exploration and digital prototypes.

What it lets people do

The index gives city leaders a measurable way to ground decisions in evidence. The Academy turns research into structured learning journeys, so others can build the same understanding step by step.

What they learned

They came to see research not as an end point but as infrastructure. With AI as a co-designer, ideas can become living, scalable systems that support cities in real time.

“This work represents a shift from research as publication to research as infrastructure — where AI helps turn ideas into living, scalable systems that support cities in real time.”

In their own words

City Intelligence Index (CII), Syn.City.AI and the Academy was built during AI Mastery.

I began actively developing AI-enabled digital products to expand and operationalise my urban research. Rather than treating AI as a passive tool, I use it as a strategic co-designer to structure knowledge, accelerate synthesis, and translate complex theory into applied systems. Through this process, I am building the City Intelligence Index (CII) as a measurable framework for evidence-based urban leadership, alongside Syn.City.AI and a growing Academy where research is transformed into structured learning journeys. AI supports the modelling of indicators, refinement of methodologies, scenario exploration, and the development of digital prototypes that make urban intelligence actionable. This work represents a shift from research as publication to research as infrastructure — where AI helps turn ideas into living, scalable systems that support cities in real time.
