A movie lover turned a nightly frustration into a working AI-built app

FlixPiq, a movie recommendation app built with ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Replit, already has a database and client and server files.

This builder watches only about two movies a month and wanted every one to count. Using a handful of AI tools, they went from a simple wish to a real app with a database behind it. Their story shows how far an idea can travel when you start building before everything is perfect.

Steve Finegan
A movie lover who builds with AI tools and cares about apps that feel like art.

FlixPiq

Before

They had time for about two movies a month and wanted to make that time count. Choosing what to watch felt harder than it should. When they asked around, they found couples who struggled to agree on a film and families searching for good family-friendly content.

“On average, I only have time to watch about 2 movies a month, and I want to make the time count.”

The turning point

In the program they started building with AI. ChatGPT and Claude helped them brainstorm names until they found FlixPiq.com, which they secured for four years. Their first build in Replit did not satisfy them, so they switched to using Gemini and Replit together.

“I started building my app with Replit, but was not happy with the result, so I switched to using Gemini and Replit together.”

After

They now have an app with a database and multiple files at both the client and server levels. A bug is holding back a live demo, and the app is not finished yet, so they recorded video tours to walk others through their screens and methodology.

What it lets people do

FlixPiq is meant to help people decide what to watch faster and better. It speaks to couples trying to agree on a movie and families looking for content everyone can enjoy.

What they learned

They learned that switching tools when a result disappoints is part of the craft, not a failure. For them, solving the problem is not enough; the app should be intuitive and beautiful, something close to art.

“In short, I want something that can be thought of as art.”

In their own words

FlixPiq was built during AI Mastery.

I used the current versions of ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, and Replit to get where I am today. I started with a vision that there should be a better way to decide what movie I wanted to watch. On average, I only have time to watch about 2 movies a month, and I want to make the time count. I also talked with multiple people who wanted to have a better way to find ways to figure out what movies to watch. It turns out, it is not an uncommon frustration among couples to agree on a movie to watch and for some families to find good family-friendly content. I used both ChatGPT and Claude to brainstorm domain names. I finally found a name that I liked and that was available - FlixPiq.com. So, I purchased 4 years of the domain to make sure that I had the rights for the foreseeable future. I started building my app with Replit, but was not happy with the result, so I switched to using Gemini and Replit together. It is critical to me to have an app that no only solves the problem but that does so in an intuitive and beautiful way. In short, I want something that can be thought of as art. The app I have now has a database and multiple files -both at the client and server levels. I ran into a bug that is stopping me from showing the app, which isn't finished anyway, but I am going to take you through a video tour using screenshots and showing a lot of my methodology.
