A hobby Etsy shop owner taught AI to design gnomes, candles and ornaments

A side-hobby Etsy shop got AI-made artwork and mockups, including a funny list of 20 Christmas Gnome "jobs".

This student runs a print-on-demand Etsy shop as a side hobby and decided to see what AI could do for it. They used Sora, ChatGPT and Gemini to create artwork, apply it to products and build mockups, ending with a playful set of Christmas Gnomes. It is an honest, hands-on story of experimenting, finding the limits and knowing you can do better next time.

AI-designed products for a print-on-demand Etsy shop

Before

Their Etsy shop was a side hobby, with products that needed artwork, product placement and mockups. Each step took work. They wanted to see how AI could fit into that process across different kinds of products.

“Last year I chose to play around and see how I can apply AI to various products.”

The turning point

They chose to play around and test AI on the whole chain: creating the artwork, applying it to the product and making mockups. They generated images in Sora, ChatGPT and Gemini, then picked the version they liked best. The most involved piece came when they collaborated with ChatGPT to write a funny list of 20 Christmas Gnome jobs for the holidays.

“Maybe one will put a smile on your face, which was my goal.”

After

They now have a set of AI-assisted products: a candle design loosely based on a popular champagne label, personalized Christmas ornaments inspired by vintage toys, and the Christmas Gnomes series. They see these as earlier works and feel sure they could improve them greatly now. Their goal stayed simple: to put a smile on someone's face.

What it lets people do

The approach lets a small hobby seller move from idea to finished product image without a design team. Comparing results from several AI tools gives them choices, and a light idea like gnome jobs can become a whole themed collection.

What they learned

They learned that AI is not the best fit for 2D flat graphics with transparent backgrounds, which still need a few extra steps afterwards. Consistency and believable mockups remain the real challenge, and seeing that clearly is part of how they keep getting better.

“Since these are earlier works, i know that I can improve them greatly now.”

I have a Print on Demand Etsy Shop that is a side hobby. Last year I chose to play around and see how I can apply AI to various products. This meant creating the artwork in AI, applying it to the product and creating mockups. Since these are earlier works, i know that I can improve them greatly now. I generated the images in Sora, ChatGPT and Gemini and then chose the version I preferred. The challenge still remains in maintaining consistency and creating believable mockups. The candle image is loosely based on a popular champagne label, and the personalized Christmas ornaments were loosely inspired by vintage toys. The more involved project are the Christmas Gnomes where i collaborated with ChatGPT to create a funny list of 20 Christmas Gnomes "jobs" for the Holidays. Maybe one will put a smile on your face, which was my goal. I have learned that for 2D flat graphic work with transparent backgrounds is not the best application for AI and will require a few extra steps afterwards.
