Project Overview
This project presents two original songs—Nameless, Forgotten and It’s a Magicked Life—adapted from poetry written over the past two decades by me. Each piece explores a distinct emotional landscape while demonstrating how AI tools can function as interpretive collaborators in musical transformation.
The original poems were written independently of AI. Years later, I used generative music tools to experiment with genre, vocal tone, arrangement, and pacing in order to translate the emotional architecture of the written work into immersive sound.
Together, these two songs form a creative study in contrast:
- Nameless, Forgotten examines erasure, visibility, objectification, and resilience, expressed through melancholic tonal elements paired with strong, resolute vocals.
- It’s a Magicked Life explores being a writer, perception, wonder, living systems awareness, and existential reflection, expressed through tonal warmth, atmospheric layering, and subtle rhythmic lift.
Both works demonstrate how AI can expand artistic expression without replacing authorship—and how writing itself is the source of the magic that music later amplifies.
Song One: Nameless, Forgotten
Description
Nameless, Forgotten is an AI-assisted musical adaptation of a narrative poem that confronts collective amnesia and quiet violence. The piece juxtaposes melancholic tonal elements with unexpectedly strong, resolute vocals. This deliberate contrast reinforces the tension between how a subject is perceived and the inner strength that remains unseen.
Rather than dramatizing a singular fall, the song focuses on the aftermath: society’s tendency to look away, move on, and forget. Through layered production—blending electronic textures, piano-driven motifs, and subtle rhythmic complexity—the arrangement deepens the poem’s commentary without altering its original structure.
Song Two: It’s a Magicked Life
Description
It’s a Magicked Life adapts a reflective poem centered on wonder, interconnection, and the strangeness of lived experience. At its core, the magic originates in the act of writing itself—the shaping of language as a way of seeing and re-seeing the world. Where Nameless, Forgotten carries sharp edges and social commentary, this piece leans into curiosity and expansive perception, revealing how the written word becomes the source of transformation long before music enters the frame.
AI tools were used to explore tonal warmth, layered harmonies, and atmospheric textures that could support the poem’s sense of awe without becoming sentimental. The result balances lyrical sincerity with expressive lift, allowing reflection and vitality to coexist.
Achievements
- Translated two decades of original poetry into cohesive musical works
- Preserved poetic structure while expanding emotional accessibility through sound
- Used tonal contrast intentionally: sadness and strength in Nameless, Forgotten; warmth and wonder in It’s a Magicked Life
- Demonstrated AI as an interpretive collaborator rather than a generative replacement
- Reclaimed and revitalized long-standing written work through modern tools
Tools
- AI music generation platforms for:
- Vocal interpretation and tonal variation
- Genre blending and arrangement exploration
- Iterative composition testing
- Human-led selection, editing, and refinement
- Original poetry authored entirely by Lea Emery
- Early model versions (pre–ChatGPT 5.2, including GPT‑4o/4.1 era tools) with ongoing iteration as model capabilities evolved
Methodology
- Began with fully written original poems created over the past two decades
- Identified emotional architecture and tension points within each text
- Iteratively tested genre, tempo, harmony, and vocal tone to match (or intentionally contrast) lyrical themes
- Refined vocal delivery to emphasize resilience in one piece and tonal warmth in the other
- Selected final arrangements based on narrative integrity, emotional coherence, and alignment with the original written voice
Creative Framework
This project was guided by the belief that, in this context, AI functioned best as an amplifier of human intention rather than a replacement for authorship. The poems existed first. The meaning existed first. AI expanded dimensionality without originating the voice.
Just as importantly, the process required learning how to think in collaboration with AI—clarifying intent, offering context, reviewing outputs critically, and deciding what aligned with the integrity of the writing. The technology did not determine the direction; it responded to it.
The process followed a layered approach:
1. Rough translation of poem to sound
2. Iterative refinement of genre, pacing, and vocal tone
3. Selection based on emotional and narrative integrity
Each song reflects deliberate human judgment at every stage of development, reinforcing that the magic begins in language and is shaped—rather than replaced—through sound.
Learnings
- Musical contrast can reveal subtext more effectively than literal tonal matching
- Writing carries the core magic; sound amplifies it
- Treating AI as a collaborator produces stronger results than treating it as a final authority
- Specificity matters: clearer direction produces more meaningful variations
- Discernment is a creative skill, not a technical one
Through this project, I learned that AI mastery is less about mastering every technical detail of a tool and more about learning how to think with it. I practiced clarifying what I wanted (action), adding meaningful context, and refining direction when outputs missed the emotional mark. I experimented, questioned results, rejected versions that felt misaligned, and remained open to unexpected interpretations that deepened the work.
Rather than accepting AI output as complete, I engaged in dialogue—testing styles, adjusting tone, and deciding what served the poem’s integrity. This process strengthened my ability to guide AI with intention while trusting my own creative judgment. It reinforced that the human role is not diminished by AI collaboration; it becomes more conscious.
