A non-developer built a working YouTube summarizer extension with AI help

A browser extension that transcribes YouTube videos, summarizes them in key points and finds further research sources, built by a non-developer.

This student does not call themselves a developer, yet they built a working Google extension that turns long YouTube videos into quick summaries. They did it by pairing AI tools with patience, testing and fixing until it worked. Their story shows how far curiosity and the right tools can take someone who has never coded.

Deandra Ilac
A self-described non-developer who set out to make long video content faster to learn from.

QuickSummarize AI: YouTube Video Summarizer

Before

They were not a developer, and coding a browser extension felt like unfamiliar ground. Long videos took time to get through, and there was no simple way to pull out the key points and follow up on them. Setting up developer mode and managing project files were new challenges.

“Gained familiarity with coding extensions despite being a non-developer.”

The turning point

During the program they began treating AI as a coding partner. They used ChatGPT to write and debug code, discovered Claude was smoother for coding, and connected a web hook to process transcriptions. Notion became the place to organize the whole project.

“Utilized ChatGPT for coding assistance.”

After

They now have a functional extension called QuickSummarize AI. It transcribes YouTube videos, produces bullet-point summaries and pulls in extra research sources found with Perplexity. Along the way they worked through frequent errors, including fixing research links that were not clickable.

What it lets people do

Viewers can grasp the key points of a long video in moments instead of watching it all. The extension also surfaces further sources for anyone who wants to dig deeper, and summaries can be organized in Notion.

What they learned

They learned that being a non-developer is not a barrier to building real tools. Coding fundamentals, careful file structure and detailed, repeated testing turned out to matter as much as the idea itself.

“Importance of detailed testing and file structuring.”
