From a very small idea to a working trading journal web app, built from scratch

A trading journal web app, designed in Claude Design, developed in Claude Code and deployed on Vercel by someone who never thought they could.

This student started with a very small idea and no expectation of finishing a real app. By pairing a design-first approach with Claude Code, they shipped a working trading journal online. Their story shows how a clear method from the program can turn doubt into something live.

Corrina Wood
A trader and first-time app builder who turned a small idea into a deployed web app.

Trading Journal Web App

Before

They had a small idea for a trading journal and little belief they could build it themselves. Early on, they tried deploying straight from Claude Code onto Vercel, as Code suggested. It burned through thousands of tokens, hit limits again and again, and never reached final deployment.

“When I tried to deploy through Claude Code onto Vercel, as Code suggested, this ate through thousands of tokens, and I hit token limits on multiple occasions & never got to final deployment.”

The turning point

Following Vyk's recommendation, they began in Claude Design to shape the look and features first, then loaded that file into Claude Code to develop it further. When deployment stalled, they went back to the deployment process from one of the course lessons, which they found quick and easy.

“I definitely think that using design for the initial phase, as per Vyk's recommendation, would be the way that I would approach future similar projects.”

After

Today they have a fully functional trading journal web app live on Vercel. They are pleased with it both visually and in how it works. They also now ask Claude to lay out options with pros and cons before choosing a path.

What it lets people do

The app gives traders a place to record and review their trades in one dedicated journal. It turns a scattered habit into a clear, visual record they can return to.

What they learned

Design first, then build: they say this is how they would approach any similar project from now on. They also learned that when a tool's suggestion stalls, a proven method from the course can be the faster road, and that momentum comes once you simply start.

“To be honest, I never thought that I could build something like this, and it started initially from a very small idea.”

In their own words

I have built a trading journal web app, which I initially designed on Claude Design. After the initial design and features were created, I then used the file to load into Claude Code to further develop the web app and then to deploy on Vercel.  I have attached a Google Docs sheet to outline the features of the Trading Journal and how I approached the project, along with the URL for the web app.  I definitely think that using design for the initial phase, as per Vyk's recommendation, would be the way that I would approach future similar projects. When I tried to deploy through Claude Code onto Vercel, as Code suggested, this ate through thousands of tokens, and I hit token limits on multiple occasions & never got to final deployment. Following conversations with Claude Code querying if there was a better way to do this to deploy onto Vercel, I went back to the deployment process from one of the course lessons, which was quick and easy. I also asked Claude to inform me of options in the future with pros & cons. To be honest, I never thought that I could build something like this, and it started initially from a very small idea. Once I got started on the project in conjunction with Claude the project built momentum & I am really pleased with the outcome, both from a visual and design perspective but also from a functionality perspective.
