Built a landfill reclamation company and converted one anti-AI Marine into a founder
A mother and Marine veteran son unite to build a landfill reclamation company using AI—transforming fifty years of recycling experience and one skeptic's resistance into a documented plan targeting three real sites, complete with verified data and a mission that finally made AI worth believing in.
THE PROJECT: I have been recycling since I was four years old — collecting discarded bottles, trading them in, and selling candy at the neighborhood pool. It was my first business. I raised my son the same way: vans full of paper hauled fifty minutes across Houston, bins sorted by hand, decades before recycling was convenient. He grew into a Marine who reads the recycling rules at his girlfriend's house. When he came home from the service — facing the loss of structure and purpose that drives so many veterans into crisis — we decided to build the answer together: a company that makes recycling truly convenient, and then goes further — reclaiming existing landfills. Sort, recycle, process, restore — until a mountain of trash becomes land a community can use again. Three first targets are documented: the Cayman Brac dump (photographed on site — mountains of tires on a Caribbean island), WM Fairbanks Landfill in Houston (permitted to rise 144 feet above the surrounding neighborhood, per WM's own TCEQ permit filing — blocks from my company's operation), and Tessman Road Landfill in San Antonio, which sits on a road literally named Trash Rd.
THE AI STORY: My son believed AI was dangerous — until AI showed him what it could build. When I told him what we'd designed together, he said: "Then I'm all in." AI didn't win the argument. The mission did — and AI made the mission real.
ACHIEVEMENTS SO FAR: Business concept and model built with AI; company family named and domains secured (Zero Landfill Partners, Zero Landfill Operations, Zero Landfill Coalition); three target sites documented — on-site photography plus AI-driven satellite analysis; landfill permit data verified from TCEQ filings; brand and website in development; and one anti-AI Marine converted into a founder.
TOOLS: Claude (Cowork + Claude Code) — strategy partner, researcher, live browser-based satellite site analysis, document and media processing, and the attached case study; ChatGPT — early exploration and visualization; Lovable — website build.
METHODOLOGY: I talk, AI structures. I dictated fifty years of story and vision in raw voice notes; Claude turned them into a brand, a plan, verified site analysis, and this submission — in one working session. My operating rules: decide fast, change slow; done beats perfect; systems create freedom.
LEARNINGS: (1) Resistance to AI melts when it's tied to a mission that matters. (2) A non-technical business owner can move at startup speed with AI as a partner. (3) One AI tool generated convincing-but-false statistics and imagery for this project; we caught it by cross-verifying with another. Responsible AI isn't trusting the output — it's building the habit of verification. That's the company we're building, and that's what won my son over. (4) The best AI projects don't start with technology — they start with a mother, a son, and a mountain of tires.
I have actionable items, the domain, the website created and ready to publish and a plan to start immediately building a this business.
