“I didn't just learn to coach others — I was coached”

My CLC Graduation Story Dael Fairbairn | Mindvalley Certified Life Coach | July 2026 I came to this programme carrying more than I realised. In the space of six months in 2021, I lost four of the people I called my parachutes — my partner, my father, my partner's brother, and my mother. I lost them one after another. And then, 3 years later, I found myself getting onto an aeroplane heading to Saudi Arabia , where My ex husband , best friend was diagnosed with cancer and had no one to help him to navigate the realisation and treatment options . Kim died 18 months later back in South Africa and after a long and difficult fight that started with a 4 month prognosis. I became the sole anchor for my son, who was fighting his way back from depression and resultant drug addiction after watching his father die of cancer and being asked to be his primary carer. I was holding everything up- and there was very little holding me. I am an architect, running my own practice for 30 odd years. I design spaces for people to live, play, work and feel whole in. I am also, quietly, the only architect in South Africa trained in Maharishi Stapathya Veda- the ancient Vedic science of building in harmony with natural law, underpinned by advanced meditation. I have spent my career asking: what does a space need to help its occupants transform ? At some point, I began asking the same question about people. That is what brought me to the Mindvalley Certified Life Coach programme. What I experienced during the programme was something I had not anticipated: I didn't just learn to coach others — I was coached. I found myself in a peer trio with two extraordinary women , each of us holding space for the others across three different countries and time zones. Charu helped me hear what I already knew but hadn't been able to feel: that my healing had to be independent of my son’s outcomes. That I was disrespectful to myself when I didn't hold firm boundaries. That the butterfly struggles out of the chrysalis, its wings get stronger and the transformed creature emerges! Jennifer brought structure, integration and rigour to what I was reworking , reinventing in my architecture practice, and then something far beyond structure - she facilitated an energetic cord healing between my son and I in which his father, my former husband Kim, stepped in from the other side. He brought soft pink light. He brought the Henley flag. (I think so we would know it was him.) He brought words I didn't know I needed to hear. I also found out, somewhere in the middle of all of this, that Jennifer and I share a life path number. That we both own the same pendulum. That no connections are accidental. At the end of this journey, I feel something I did not expect to feel so soon: grounded, hopeful . I came in overwhelmed, carrying more than I should have been carrying alone. I leave with my practice clearer, my market of leisure architecture (resorts, retreats, hotels)reworked ,my boundaries firmer, my sense of who I am and what I offer more defined than it has ever been. Architecture. Sacred spatial intelligence. Emotional clarity. The transformation of identity through place. I coach from that place now. Not from theory - from having walked through fire and come out the other side knowing that the questions matter more than the answers, and that the most powerful reframes are always the ones the client arrives at themselves. My son, is still on his journey of transformation . So am I. So is my daughter with her own adventures and challenges. But something has shifted- in all of us and in what I now know is possible when you are seen , when clarity becomes the vision of choice.
