The 3 keys to manifesting: desire, belief, and the one almost nobody reaches

In 1992, a college kid climbed up to his top bunk, pulled out a piece of paper, and wrote down ten things he wanted from his life. One of them was: Win an Academy Award for Best Actor.

It was bold, wild, and near improbable.

Twenty years later, that same kid stood on the stage of the Dolby Theatre with the golden statue in his hands.

His name is Matthew McConaughey.

When Matthew came on the Mindvalley Podcast, I asked him about that list. There was no vision board. No coach. No SMART goal framework, no deadline, nothing on that page that would survive a performance review. He wrote down what his soul wanted, and then he went and lived his life. Every goal on the list eventually came true.

Then he said five words I have never been able to shake.

“The target attracts the arrow.”

Your vision isn’t passive. It pulls the arrow of your life toward it, it nudges you toward the right rooms, the right people, the right ideas, long before you can see how any of it connects.

Which raises the harder question. If naming the target is that powerful, why do so many of us name it and then watch nothing happen for years?

The rule you were handed instead

Most of us were given exactly one instruction for how goals work. Want it more. Work longer. Get up earlier, push harder, and if it still isn’t moving, you clearly didn’t want it badly enough.

Somebody installed that rule in you before you were old enough to inspect it. It is why you find yourself checking your progress every week like a man refreshing a tracking page, and why the checking makes it worse rather than better.

Effort was never the only variable.

José Silva figured out what the actual variables are. Silva created the Silva Method, and he died in 1999, but the framework he left behind is the one I still run every significant goal of my life through. He trained roughly 6 million people to access altered states of mind, and when you teach 6 million people anything, your method stops being theory and starts getting precise. I became a certified Silva instructor in 2002.

His claim was this. Every manifesting block a human being can have falls into three categories.

Desire. Belief. Expectancy.

Not fifteen. Three. And if even one of them is missing, the whole system leaks.

Key 1: Desire — but not the kind you think

Most people set goals from their head. They pick something reasonable. Something achievable. Something they could defend in a meeting without anyone raising an eyebrow.

That isn’t a desire. That’s negotiation.

Real desire comes from somewhere lower down. It’s the thing you want so badly that saying it out loud feels faintly embarrassing, because it sounds too big, too audacious, too far from the life you’re currently standing in.

That embarrassment is the signal. Not the red light. The green one.

Here’s my rough test. If the goal doesn’t give you a small drop of vertigo when you say it to another human being, it probably isn’t the real one. It’s the edited version. The safe version, the one you pre-shrank so nobody would ask you who you think you are.

The author Joe Vitale put it better than I ever have. A good goal should scare you a little and excite you a lot.

Read that ratio carefully, because it matters. Ninety percent excitement, ten percent fear. If there’s no fear at all, the goal doesn’t require you to become anyone new, and the whole point of a real goal is that it drags a bigger version of you into existence to go and hold it.

So before you go any further, ask yourself one honest question about the thing you’re chasing.

Is this my true desire, or someone else’s desire to dress in Gucci?

A soul desire feels like exhaling. Hold it in your mind and something in your chest actually drops. An ego desire feels like tension, like you’re rehearsing a version of yourself for an audience that isn’t in the room. Sit with your goal for ten seconds and notice which one your body does.

You’ll know straight away. You’ll also be tempted to argue with it.

Key 2: Belief — three layers deep

This is where most manifesting teaching gets lazy. It tells you to just believe, as if belief were a light switch you could flip on your way out of the room.

It isn’t. Belief has layers, and you have to walk through all three.

Layer 1: Is this possible for anyone?

Has any human being on this planet ever done the thing you want to do? If the answer is yes, you’re fine. The possibility exists in the field. You aren’t chasing a fantasy; you’re chasing something with precedent.

Layer 2: Is this possible for someone like me, in this timeframe?

Notice those last three words, because this is the layer where most people quietly give up. Not out loud. They just stop taking the goal seriously, file it under someday, and let the inner critic run the numbers until it returns the verdict: not for someone like me.

Two things fix this layer. The first is the timeframe. Set your big goals three years out rather than one; one year creates pressure, and pressure creates the desperation that poisons everything downstream. Three years creates room. In three years, an ordinary person with the right beliefs can build the business, transform the body, write the book, find the love.

The second is harder, and I learned it by failing.

I got into the Silva Method as a teenager, and my very first goal was to heal my short-sightedness, because I hated wearing glasses. I failed miserably. I nearly abandoned the whole method over it. Then, on some later reread of the book, a line I’d skimmed past a dozen times finally landed. Silva said: don’t jump the gun. What he meant was, don’t try to heal cancer before you can heal dandruff.

So I picked something smaller. I had a serious case of acne, five years of it, five years of being called pimple-face at school. I applied the Silva healing work to my skin, and five weeks later I had clear skin, and it stayed.

That did something to me that had nothing to do with my face. It proved to my nervous system that reality bends. And that one small piece of evidence is what let me aim at something absurd the following year: in 1993 I qualified for the US Open Taekwondo Championships, representing my country. I had visualised that outcome for a year beforehand.

I do not think I could have believed the second thing without having lived the first.

Layer 3: Can I have this without it costing me something I can’t afford to lose?

Almost nobody talks about this one, and your subconscious runs it on every goal you set. It’s asking a protective question. If I actually get this, do I lose love? Safety? The person I’ve always been?

If some part of you believes the answer is yes, that part will quietly sabotage you, and it won’t feel like sabotage. It’ll feel like bad timing and busy weeks. Not weakness. Protection.

Now, at this point you may be thinking: hold on. Key one told me to stretch the goal, key two is telling me to shrink it. What exactly am I supposed to be doing?

Think of it like training for a marathon.

The goal is to cross the line at twenty-six miles. But you don’t lace up on day one and run twenty-six miles. You run one kilometre. Then three. Then five. Your body adapts, your endurance compounds, and one day the distance that was impossible is simply the distance you run on a Sunday.

Your belief system trains identically.

Hold the big desire. Don’t shrink it. But break the road to it into smaller goals that hand your belief system evidence it can actually feel. My acne was my one-kilometre run. Taekwondo was mile eight.

Start where your belief can breathe. Then scale.

Key 3: Expectancy — the one almost nobody reaches

This is the deepest of the three and the most misunderstood, because it arrives wearing the costume of two lesser things.

Hope says: I really want this to happen. Hope is beautiful, and it’s fragile, and underneath it sits doubt; you hope precisely because you aren’t sure.

Faith says: I trust this could happen. Stronger. Still living in the country of maybe.

Expectancy says something else entirely. This is already on its way, and I’m simply waiting for it to arrive.

Let me make that concrete, because it’s the difference that decides everything.

Imagine you lent a friend a thousand dollars, a real chunk of what you earn in a month — and he promised it back in a week. A week passes. Then three. Then he stops answering your calls, and by month three you’re furious. Then the message finally comes. He’s sorry, he lost himself for a while, the cheque is written, it’s in the mail, and here’s the tracking number.

Now check your body. The money is not in your account. Nothing material has changed. And you have completely stopped worrying about it.

That is expectancy. It isn’t excitement, and it isn’t optimism. It’s almost boring in its certainty, and it cannot coexist with anxious checking — because anxious checking broadcasts I don’t have this, and I’m afraid I never will, and the universe is a mirror.

Expectancy at its most extreme looks like total commitment with no hedge in it anywhere. David Ghiyam, who teaches Kabbalah on our Manifesting Mastery program, showed me what that looks like.

About fourteen years ago, when David and MaryRuth were both twenty-six and still just friends, MaryRuth was diagnosed with a breast tumour. She was already deep into health and wellness, and she came to David and asked what she could do spiritually, not just physically. She committed to forty days of green juice and a strict physical regimen. David gave her practices to run alongside it. And then he made a commitment of his own that still moves me when I think about it.

Every night for forty nights, he woke at midnight and stayed awake until dawn. He studied. He prayed. He lit a candle for her soul and held space for her healing with his entire being.

Forty nights. On day forty, her scan came back clear.

I’m not telling you that as medicine and I’m not claiming the practice is what cured her. I’m telling you because of what it shows about the posture. David didn’t do the protocol while privately assuming it wouldn’t work. He committed so completely that there was no room anywhere in his field for doubt.

That’s expectancy. Certainty in motion.

Here’s the practical version for the rest of us, and it’s the only diagnostic you need.

If it were already on its way, what would I be doing differently this week, and am I doing it?

If the honest answer is nothing, you’re in hope. Expectancy shows up in behaviour long before it shows up in results. Someone who knows a guest is coming doesn’t sit by the window wishing. They go and make up the guest room.

The three keys together

Desire is knowing what your soul actually wants, not what’s reasonable, not what you can defend, but the thing that’s almost too big to say out loud.

Belief is walking all three layers. Possible for anyone. Possible for me, in this timeframe. Safe for me to receive.

Expectancy is moving through your week as though the thing is already on its way, because your behaviour is the broadcast.

Miss one and the system leaks, and it leaks in a specific way. Burning desire with no belief becomes bitterness. Belief with no expectancy becomes white-knuckled hoping. Expectancy with no real desire is the worst of the three, because you’ll succeed at things that don’t matter to you.

But when all three are running at once, something shifts. Matthew wrote his goal on a piece of paper in a dorm room in 1992 with no plan and no idea how. He named it, he believed it, and he lived as though it were already on its way.

That’s DBE. Desire, belief, expectancy, and it took Silva 6 million students to work out that there were only ever three.

So take the biggest thing you’re currently chasing and be honest with yourself. Which of the three is it actually failing on? Leave a comment on this blog. I’d love to know your thoughts.

With love,

P.S. If you want to train these three rather than just understand them, that’s the work inside Mindvalley Meditations. It has over 1,000 tracks to get you into altered states and to help you visualise and move toward whatever you’re aiming at — and to build the state you want to hold while you do it, whether that’s peace of mind, bliss, or plain confidence. I brought in more than 100 teachers, including Paul McKenna and Marisa Peer, along with institutes like the Monroe Institute.

  1. It’s been a challenging year, and while I’ve pivoted my business toward a framework I truly believe has exceptional capabilities, it’s been hard to cover everyday expenses. The practical reality is that I’ve had to take a part-time job, which slows development and extends the financial timeline for the new system. Desire is strong; belief wavers on occasion but is solid; expectancy is my weakness. I grew up with the mindset that wealth and success were for other people and you have to work hard, money is difficult to make… I want my business to make millions. To change lives around the world and find the financial freedom (including the generosity) that comes with being wealthy (can’t believe I just shared that publicly!Fwew!)

  2. Thanks Vishen, truly eye opening. I was missing the Believe in the timeframe. Will work on that from now, reminding me that we can bend time.

  3. One thing I forgot to connect back to your question: I chose expectancy. But writing this made me realize that my problem wasn’t that I lacked expectancy. I actually had a very strong expectancy, I had just connected it to the movement I believed was coming, and therefore partly to your vision. I lived and made choices as if that change was already on its way.

Maybe what I am learning now is that I need to bring that expectancy back to my own path. 😊

  4. Is this AI? Or is it that GPT is riffing off of the tech-corpo style that Mindvalley is adjacent to? I’m not even meaning to criticize, but I do want to spark the discussion on the authenticity of the thoughts and presentation.

Why should I read something that an AI generated? Can’t I just read the prompts.

Apologies if this seems like an accusation, I just want to ensure that I am getting the same authentic communication as I have seen from Mindvalley that does set it apart from other companies.

  5. Dear Vishen,

This question about expectancy made me realize something important.

I think expectancy actually is where I got stuck, but not in the way I first thought.

For a long time, I had a very strong expectancy. One of the main reasons I connected so deeply to you and to Mindvalley was your vision of changing education and the school system. I had that dream too, and I believed we were ultimately moving towards the same kind of societal change.

That expectancy took me quite far. I became a Mindvalley member, learned an enormous amount, and eventually found RTT through Marisa Peer. All of this has genuinely changed me, and I am truly grateful for what I have learned.

You also genuinely reach people like me, people who are open, emotionally aware, driven by meaning, and who really want to change something in the world.

But lately, I noticed that I no longer felt truly connected to Mindvalley, and I couldn’t understand why. This question about expectancy helped me see it.

I think I had connected my own dream to my expectation of where your vision was going.

My dream is still to change the school system. And for me, that means that this kind of knowledge and personal development eventually has to become accessible to every child, including the children who would never find their own way to Mindvalley or personal development. The child who simply walks into an ordinary classroom on Monday morning. Especially the children who don’t naturally fit into the systems we have created for them.

And that leaves me with a genuine question:

When you speak about changing the global education system, is it still your vision that this will eventually reach and change the existing school system too, so that it becomes accessible to every child?

I would genuinely love to know your answer. But I also realize that I don’t need that answer in order to move forward.

Because I think this is where my expectancy needs to change. I need to separate my own dream from my expectation of your vision. Not because I no longer believe in what you have created, I know how much value it has brought me, but because I need to find out what my part in that change is.

I need to go into the world, see with my own eyes what is happening around me, what is needed, and where I can actually contribute. And by doing that, I think I have already started.

So maybe expectancy wasn’t missing at all. Maybe I had placed it somewhere outside of myself.

And now I am taking it back.

Thank you so much for everything.

  6. When we were expecting our babies, it was clear our expectations were met by God,
Our desire to be parents & the firm belief that we have the ability to make our shared dream happen, .
Now applying those methods to our manifesting practices is revealing that without us knowing the exact methods of the process, yet innately choosing something we desire from our soul purpose,

resonating with fullfilling our beliefs ,that we can achieve our desired outcomes in life, while recognising our sense of expectancy knowing that our beliefs brings our desires more into focus, especially when we choose to expect the outcome,,

As a young adult , I never knew we could expect things, in fact was taught to believe “expect nothing” in social circles, the type of rules that you are referring to Vishen,
that confuse the potential of our spiritual human creativity,
These days being bold enough to trust my desire from the echo of truth deep within my soul,

I am a generation of elders & grandparents now, that witness my beliefs holding sacred ground for my/our expectations, in small acts of service to my family & community,

While I am not expert at creating all that I desire yet, the practice of three concepts from Jose Silva is such a privelage to share from the experience of those who have done this before, with so many people in practice,

Desire, Believe & Expectancy are elements of our thought patterns tapping into the three principles of Sydney Banks, universal mind, conscious awareness & divine law of thought,
Desire is really from the echo of truth within the primal urge unspoken yet the energy behind our innate desires is giving us the direction one step at a time,
Believe in our abilities since experience is all we can speak from, equals conscious awareness & the innate ability to rebalance ourselves built-in to our DNA,
the conscious act of letting go of every thought & it’s associated feelings, puts us inside the gift of present moment,
From present moment we can find freedom to choose our very next best version of ourselves in divine thought, which is the expectation that the holy spirit is carrying the unseen load of our daily grind, while trusting in the holy spirit to bring clear defined outcomes by our best intentions for ourselves & others,

I feel like these things are so relative to the Catholic rules & upbringing we were given,
where divine intervention is possible for everyone when we surrender our personalities over to the invitation of truth by the holy spirit ,whom we make room for within our being, by actively let go & let God, to live Gods plan for our life,
in the flow of universal oneness with humanity,
Not to achieve success all by ourselves, but to invite the holy spirit within as a measure of respect for knowing where we all are connected with the universal mind,
the initial urge of desire ( echo of truth energy from a formless position) that now become a form of our expression in speaking to our minds eye with images first & the feelings they bring,
While I am able to acknowledge the patterns of desire believe & expectancy in my immediate family and how we caused our children to arrive in love in this world,
I am also aware that sometimes in our professional life and small business activities, I am moved by the echo of truth from formless energy , that messages my mind with images & feelings about what is going to be created, that also provides a sense of expecting the desired outcomes to arrive at their fruition,

    Sounds good in theory,
however , while going through those experiences, I wouldn’t have ever known they were named after the three concepts, by Jose Silva, yet that is clear about the patterns of universal energy flowing from within.

I could see that my career business desires are only manifesting from the echo of truth because I/ we know ,
that we need a meaningful experience, to work with,

Able to recognise the shallow ground of desire from the head,
Clearing out the mind of everyday chatter, connecting our hearts & minds in the conscious awareness of letting go to God almighty everything that I am not able to carry, puts me in the now, that is a gift of the holy spirit,

because we gave all the burdens of belief & expectancy over to God almighty,
As woman I am not able to say that one of these areas failed in my practice, as I feel that all three areas synchronised during various stages of life creating things for us that we never imagined before or certainly didn’t expect,
In all this learning I also appreciate the elements of surprise, as a consequence of not knowing every step,
On the other hand, there are various goals that I have not reached for my business life, although I have a vague idea of the desired outcomes, I believe in the natural energy for manifesting practices, & the reality of expecting things to happen as we imagine is bringing the outcome into present time, that seems to be a motivational chapter that nourishes from the cycle of inner listening within,

Also I believe it works well when both of us are believing together with the outcomes we desire,

I am not the expert however yet I can understand all that you described , from observation of how things happen when you truly align with the soul purpose in our own life,
Thanks for your enlightened information today from Vishen & Mindvalley office,
Thanks for the invitation to comment
    Peace be with you all
    Cheers

  7. I am Dekyi-Lee Oldershaw in Canada. I want to empower millions in the easy, most transformative receptive visualization of my Transformative Mindfulness methods. It is basically using the healing potential of the mind. I’m now 71 ans want it also to be accessible to anyone, long after I am gone.

I know that it has the potential to be used by millions to help themselves and their families or patients. And we need something this easy to shift things.

As a younger athlete, I understood the power of the mind for performance. It helped me win a North American championship. One day in training, I finally broke my pain barrier and spent three days in blissful euphoria with a vast connection to everything. The experience of competing with other girls – that aggression – became unbearable. The only way for me to gracefully drop out of the competitive environment was to get sick enough to have to quit.
15 years later, I understood what I’ve done and through receptive, not directed meditation, a self-healing method of easily and gracefully accessing then transforming root causes of challenges and illnesses became clear.

I healed myself first. Then over 40 years, I facilitated it with people 10 to 90 years old in 15 countries, trained facilitators in four languages, finally training medical and healthcare professionals for four universities and five hospitals. I witnessed remarkable results, reduced symptoms for some and complete remission for others.

I’m presently using AI, am open and creating easy systems to empower millions with in a way that offers trust, heart, caring and confidence. I know the perfect opportunity to deliver this will show itself soon.

  8. I love this message Vishen! My scary desire is to have my own quest on mindvalley and to be on stage with you and a group of people that I can finally feel are my “tribe”😊🫶🏻

  9. Quiero sanarme de una enfermedad del sistema nervioso muy extraña por la que estoy padeciendo, el metodo silva me es util pero tengo que usarlo muy de a pocos aun, me refiero a mis tres escenas para sanacion

  10. This is brilliant, thank you Vishen. I love your description of true desire… “saying it out loud feels faintly embarrassing”. That will stick with me. Thank you again.

  11. Vishen : After I read everything you had to say about about the Three Manifesting Blocks , I moved forward and set my goal. And I set it for 3 years. They were : Completing Restoring My 1905 House: and Clearing off 50% of any outstanding debt.
Now I am a 76 year old female. Born May 13,1950. When I re-read my Desires my chest did sink down as I breathed. I felt the difference ! This is when I realized that I had already ordered a book by Vishen yesterday on Sept 1/26
    Arriving September 15 – September 19

A bove is a copy of my Amazon order.
Then it hit me. This was not a coincidence. It was my body telling me that I was already on my way to my goals before I read Vishen’s article. His words gave me the assurance that I could do and that my age was not a deterrent.
Love what you do Vishen ! <3

  12. I see now that my previous state of being was 3: belief and expectancy without desire , leading in success in matters not important to my soul. Now I’m desire and belief plus white-knuckled hope. So now I’m setting myself up to do what I would be doing if it were already happening. And preparing myself to get on track for the likely lapses of belief that may try to trip me up.

  13. This email/post really popped out at me this morning as I read it in its entirety. Often I skim through such content, but not this morning. It was a beautiful gift that reassured me of being on my highest truest path, right now. And due to the work that I do and lived embodiment of past failings and doubts- I NOW finally understand the steps you outlined to be true. It was beautiful to read its simplicity and accuracy. “The target attracts the arrow”, brilliant. Thanks for sharing Vishen.

  14. I read Vishen’s full article carefully. Your strongest response is one that makes clear that DBE is not simply a concept you admire—it is the architecture through which you have lived your entire life.

    Hey Vishen—

This is Dr. Bill, and I **Freaking Love This!**

Your article did more than resonate with me. It gave a name—and a remarkably simple structure—to the mentality that has shaped my entire life:

    **Desire. Belief. Expectancy.**

DBE is not merely a philosophy I have studied or recently adopted. It is something I recognize because I have lived it.

Long before I had the words to explain it, I carried an unshakable conviction that I could change my reality. I listened to that inner voice—the one that creates the gut feeling that you are capable of becoming far more than your present circumstances might suggest.

That belief often extended far beyond my existing skills, social status, physical abilities, or perceived mental limitations. I learned to look beyond **“What Is”** and envision **“What Could Be.”**

For years, I have taught people that they can accomplish almost anything in life if two conditions are present:

**You must want it badly enough—and you must be willing to sacrifice for it.**

But your article helped me recognize that there was always a third component operating within me. It was not simply Desire, and it was more than Belief.

    It was **Expectation**.

I did not merely hope that my goals might become real. Somewhere deep within me, I expected that they would. I may not have known when they would happen—or exactly how—but I believed they were already waiting for me somewhere in the future. My responsibility was to keep moving toward them until I arrived.

Perhaps that is why your words make so much sense to a hardworking boy who came from very little, but whose nickname was—and still is—**“Driven.”**

Even when I was young, I visualized achieving my life goals through what I now call my **Christmas Tree Analogy**.

The tree begins with a strong, sturdy trunk: our values, purpose, character, and vision. Upon that foundation, we build the meaningful layers of our lives—one focused day at a time.

    The days become weeks.

    The weeks accumulate into months.

    The months become quarters.

The quarters add up to years.

And those years ultimately become the story of a lifetime.

Each disciplined action adds another branch. Each obstacle overcome adds strength. Each meaningful accomplishment fills out another layer of the tree.

But the ultimate goal—the vision that has been calling us forward all along—is **The Star at the top of the Christmas Tree.**

You do not reach that Star through one extraordinary moment. You reach it through thousands of seemingly ordinary moments, deliberately invested in the direction of an extraordinary dream.

That is what DBE means to me:

**Desire** determines the Star you choose.

**Belief** gives you the courage to begin climbing toward it.

**Expectation** keeps you climbing when the path is difficult, the results are not yet visible, and other people tell you that it cannot be done.

The Star becomes my target, and—as you and Matthew McConaughey so powerfully expressed—**“The target attracts the arrow.”**

Throughout my life, I have encountered circumstances, limitations, and people who gave me every reason to accept “No” as the final answer.

But “No” was never the end of my story.

At most, it meant: **Not yet. Find another way. Keep climbing.**

I now understand that what earned me the name “Driven” was not simply my work ethic. It was the combination of an unbendable Desire, an enduring Belief in what could be, and an Expectation so strong that quitting never felt like a legitimate option.

The Star was already there in my mind.

I simply had to become the person capable of reaching it.

Thank you, Vishen, for giving such clarity to something I have instinctively understood, passionately believed, and imperfectly—but persistently—lived throughout my entire life.

    This is DBE.

    This is being **Driven**.

And this is how I have continued working my way up the Christmas Tree—one day, one sacrifice, one accomplishment, and one seemingly impossible dream at a time—always reaching for **The Star**.

    With gratitude and determination,

  15. I have been saying, writing, and telling other people for the last 7 years now that I would love to be part of the movement that my country, El Salvador, is going through right now. I would like to inspire young people of El Salvador so they can change their minds and know how much potential they have, and they can also change my country for good, so we can finally get out of the underdeveloped category. In the past I have enrolled in programs for personal development, but right now I have been committing more time to the program “Be Extraordinary.” I feel like finally I’m working on polishing myself so I can get ready for that goal that I have embraced for quite a while. Vishen has inspired me, and I can see myself doing this. I’m getting ready!

  16. Hi Vishen –
    Thanks for the great post!

I have a question on the KEY TWO – is it possible for anyone?

What I want to do is unique and in the sense no one ever done it before in the way I want to do. Some may have tried but was not successful at all.

It has to due with my specific situation and circumstances and I am just not sure how to go about it BECAUSE there is no one who really done what I want to do. (Has to do with the past, the horror of it, and how to use it in service of others and showing that one can transform this – I know I am vague but this is a public forum – if curious, it would be an honor to share it with you privately).

    So, how does that work?
